Yield

Yield
The willow bends.
And when the wind blows
it yields and lives.

The oak stands stiff,
And when hit by the wind,
its branches crack and come falling down.

That which stands straight and tall,
will tumble from its former glory.
Winning can be losing.

What can yield and bend
can survive all that is it faces.
Thus, to lose is to win.

  1. I really like how you incorporated the balance of yin and yang in your poem. The contrasting of ideas and visuals between the oak tree and the willow tree captured my attention right away. Great job!

  2. I enjoyed your clear and pithy writing about non-action. The line "That which stands straight and tall / will tumble from its former glory" particularly struck me because it shows how being proud and tall is not always good.

  3. I like how the message of needing to go with the flow, "What can yield and bend
can survive all that is it faces. Thus, to lose is to win." It is concise and well written.

  4. I really like the extended metaphor that you use in this poem and how you used trees to describe the different between flexibility and rigidness. The last few lines were very deep.
