Midsummer's Night Nostalgia

Midsummer’s Night Nostalgia

I remember once;
The softness of the grass,
the whistling of the chivalrous wind,
waltzing with Mom’s hair.
The light shining against the warmth
of her eyes,
the ochre shade of a fresh pot of coffee,
inviting me over.

Like the great wings of eagles,
her arms swoop swiftly around me.
Eyes glued to the sky,
we sit huddled upon the
Earth’s silken blanket,
silently waiting for the
thunder of Prometheus’s
fire that sets the sky ablaze
every Fourth of July.

Boom boom!
Go the launchers,
far off in the distance where
not a soul can hear the
Boom boom!
of the blooming effervescence
that struggles to erupt
from my chest.

Pop pop pop.
Go the golden drops of
celestial rain that dive
gracefully
from the sky
like the first rays of epiphany
and enlightenment.
Pop pop pop.
Go my eyes,
wide and round as a baby owl’s,
ready to take its first flight.
Badum badum.
Go the luminous explosions,
harmonizing with the beat of
the soldiers of freedom
and their rhythmic drums,
marching through the immaturity of my mind
liberating each thought,
each dream,
that lays entangled within.

Crackle crackle.
Go the swirls of light that
gloss over my small,
ever-brightening body.
The euphonious symphony of sounds
serenades me,
as I break free from Mom’s
suddenly suffocating embrace.

Then silence.
My tongue still tingling with the stimulating flavor
of the extraordinary
dark ocean of the night sky that
Boom boom’s
and pop pop pop’s,
breathing its dulcet drops of
freedom and maturity,
penetrating the deepest
parts of me.

I remember once;
childhood.
Ephemeral as the bursting flames
Of a firework,
sinking into the vast
canvas of the ocean’s
stygian waters.

Smokey Goddess

 Smokey Goddess

I once met a girl who was sad
But she wasn’t just sad
She was Pensive too

She was so sad,
That her smile disappeared
Replacing her lips with a line of roses
Regrets and dark intuitions
Color her hair a raven shade

She is driven
Not by happiness
Not by anger
But by her lack of judgment
A blessing and a curse
A thick cloud of smoke

The smoke that masks flaws
Everything was beautiful to her
She trusted everything
Which made her vulnerable
She fell in love with everything
She fell in love with everyone

She told me
That the men she met
Had held all of her emotions
In their handbags
Handbags that jostled around

In the end it broke the girl
Her tears watered the roses
The roses that made her pensive
Roses of which grieved her smile

Pond

Pond

Watching the ducks waddle around the pond
Makes me think
Where are they going and what do they have to do
I have three tests, two projects, and about ten million other things to do
Seeing the ducks cause ripples in the murky pond
The flies coming up from the pond just like I hope my grades will as well
All the while, watching ducks hobble about their seemingly simple lives
Maybe filled with small bits of action and even other bits of life
Where they have to get grades and go to college
But they don´t
And I do
And I have been watching the ducks for an hour
Trying to pull myself away from what was now
And hoping that I would be able to  what I want
Just succeed
All you have to do is get grades, test scores, outside activities
And seemingly endless lists.
But I don´t
And they don´t either

The ducks in the pond have to worry about finding the next crumbImage result for pond with ducks

Our Impressionable Eyes

Our Impressionable Eyes
To Natalie:
Cheeks that outweigh the rest of my face,
are my defining feature.

To Thomas:
Bright but heavy hazel eyes,
are my defining feature.

To Jacquii:
Million dollar lips that could wear any shade,
are my defining feature.

Defined by my features.

If I try too much...if I don’t try enough...if I don’t try at all...

Defined by my choices.

First impressions are so powerful.

Imprisoned in a labeled box,
by different people
who always see me
in different ways.

To each of them,
I am something else.
Yet I feel like nothing more than just an exterior.

In seconds,
they handpick
my physical qualities, sort them out,
and as if I were a puzzle,
put me back together
to see the image
they have decided for me.

There is not a single thing we look for,
but deep in the pit of our minds we know
the assumptions
are already prepackaged.

Defined by how hard I try
to make myself look
...feel...?
more appealing.

We are left to fend for ourselves
but we wither away
in the same hole as everyone else.

Each of us sees the easy resolution:
don’t judge, don’t let features define.

But those same daggers
that were used to cut out of all the judgement,
dare to come back at night and stab us in the back,
because social nature
has already been established.

I do it. You do it. We all do it.

My features make you decide who I am
before you ever really see me.

I am so much more than just a nose.
I am so much more than just a size.
I am so much more than just a pair of eyes.
I am so much more than just what you see.

Please,
please don’t let my defining feature
be what keeps you
from knowing me.

Don’t let your impressionable eyes
kill away any other possibility

of what I could be.

To My Parents

To My Parents

I am not a statistic
I am a person.

You tell me it's my illness talking,
That I am doing this on purpose
That I am stronger than my illness
So you punish me for acting disorderly.

Depriving myself of a necessity used to be a choice
It makes me feel in control, powerful, strong
The devil and I are walking hand in hand
But “you’re just sick”.

The fictional voice in my head urges me:
“Don’t eat it, it’s poison. You’re letting them win”
The monster in my head fights back.
No one understands, I didn’t ask for this––
Or the nights I spend telling myself
“You’re okay”.

So, you put me in front of the mirror
And tell me
“You’re beautiful, please stop this”
“You’re ruining your future”
Mom, dad I’m fine.

I try to escape
But the maze that is my mind is inescapable
And I am lost,
I’m lost with no sense of what I’ve done.

And you tell me over and over: it’s just the illness.

The tornado that blew through my life
Still wreaks havoc––
The mess that it’s wrath entailed
continues to persist.
It’s finally time to pick up the broken pieces
And learn how to live again.

So I tell you it’s not the illness,
I’m stronger than the devil.
