The emptiness of Sohrab

IMG_2044.JPG

This image represents Sohrab’s mind. The individual spaces represent Sohrab’s possible life. What he could’ve done is captured in each of the spaces. Before Sohrab had a joyful life with his parents, like these cubbies had once been bright and new. However, now, it’s empty, also reflecting upon Sohrab’s loneliness and lack of connection with others. The dust and cobwebs demonstrate how Sohrab has been left uncared of and mistreated which causes him to lose the will to interact with others and to live. The sliver of light entering the cubbies is the hope that Amir brings when he saves Sohrab. However, the majority of the cubby remains dark and empty representing Sohrab’s pessimistic world view and lack of happiness.

  1. I really like the metaphor you chose — it perfectly captures Sohrab's personality... his quietness and pessimism. This also connects to the end of the book once you've read the last few chapters.

  2. This is a really good metaphor, and it really shows how empty Sohrab feels. This also connects to Sohrab feeling dirty, so much so that he takes a one hour bath every night, as shown later in the book.

  5. I like how there are mostly dark sides to the cubby, while there are still lighter sides in some parts of it. I think it fits the idea of Sohrab feeling sinful and dirty, as there are cobwebs strewn across it.

  6. I really like the picture that you decided to go with, I think it does a really good job accurately representing what Sohrab is going through during this time in the book. I especially like the "silver light" metaphor. Building off of how the cubby used to be bright and new, I would also make the connection that the cubby is beginning to be chipped off, just like Sohrab is being worn down.
